Chapter Nine

Mark drummed his fingers on the armrest of the chair he had situated on his newly sanded deck. He’d refinished the deck chair as well, and it was now a glossy sandalwood color. The ocean was gray this evening. The sunshine of the afternoon had been covered by heavy, dark clouds.

Mark had no doubt that it was raining over the ocean, and it was only a matter of time before the rain reached his beach house. He’d turned in the renovation bid to the investor and had already been sent an approval. Work would start as soon as he got the order in and the laborers scheduled.

The pool house supplies would be delivered to Don’s tomorrow morning, and Mark already had an eight-man crew booked for the job. And he’d exchanged emails with several other clients who were looking at either home renovations or building upgrades. Business was good.

So why did he feel unsettled? Usually approaching storms made him want to hibernate and wait it out. Maybe warm up a freezer dinner, watch an old cowboy movie on cable. But he kept thinking about the color of Roxy’s hair and how she’d given him that impish smile when she first saw him in the bakery. And . . . how she’d invited him to her bungalow.

Mark took a long drink from the water bottle in his nondrumming hand. She’d probably be home now. The lighting was far from good with the approaching storm. He wondered if she’d had dinner yet. Maybe she wouldn’t mind if he grabbed something and brought it over. It wouldn’t really be a date, would it?

This dating hiatus had started out as an argument between him and his brother. Don had called Mark out and told him that he was a serial dater—a menace to society. Mark had said he’d prove him wrong. He wouldn’t date anyone for six months.

Don had taken on Mark’s challenge and said he’d take Mark skydiving if he could last nine months. Mark had laughed and said he could last an entire year, that it would actually be refreshing not to have to worry about the next male-female encounter. Don had stuck out his hand, and they’d shaken on it.

It wasn’t that Mark couldn’t pay for a skydiving trip on his own, but it was being challenged by his brother that had spurred him on. Yes, it might seem juvenile to some people that Mark had made a silly bet and felt like he had to prove something, but to Don, he did have to prove something.

Mark had tried calling his brother twice that day to find out what exactly he’d said to Roxy about Mark’s dating hiatus. But Don’s secretary had said he was slammed with meetings.

“Even multimillionaires have to eat,” Mark muttered. He fished his cell phone from the side table next to his chair and called his brother yet again.

“Mark, I was just thinking about you,” Don said in a cheery voice when he answered.

“Probably because I called you twice today,” Mark said.
